What is a Phobia?

A phobia is an extreme fear and is often so overpowering that the sufferer cannot function in a normal way.
Is It a Phobia?
It's normal to be cautious about certain things, for example snakes, because some of them can harm us, likewise we have normal caution on a high building or driving fast...but it's not normal to have uncontrollable panic, crying, nausea, dizziness or fainting, tenseness, breathlessness and a pounding heart. These are some of the common symptoms of a phobia.
How do phobias occur?
It is generally accepted that the source of most phobias occur as the result of traumatic situations. The amount of emotion generated by a trauma creates a phobia and there is a disruption in the body's energy system. The object of the phobia does not even need to be present and just thinking about it can bring up the phobic feelings.
