In the 19th century a Scottish Surgeon named James Esdaile used hypnosis (or mesmerism as it was then called) as a form of anesthesia during surgical procedures while working in India in the 1840s. In 1846 he published a book with the results of 200 surgeries he had performed using this method, including major operations. He would induce a trance-like state in patients which allowed him to operate without causing pain, at a time when chemical anesthetics like ether and chloroform were not yet widely available or were just beginning to be used. Esdaile reported remarkable success, claiming that his patients experienced little to no pain and had better recovery outcomes due to the absence of shock from pain.
While Esdaile's use of hypnosis in surgery is well-documented, some modern scholars suggest his success may have been influenced by the placebo effect, cultural factors, or the suggestibility of his patients. Nonetheless, his work is considered a significant early exploration of medical hypnosis.
Hypnosis is still used today in medical settings, including for surgical procedures, particularly when anesthesia cannot be used or is contraindicated. While not as common as in James Esdaile's time, medical hypnosis (often called hypnoanesthesia or hypnosedation) is employed in specific cases, especially for patients allergic to anesthetics, those with conditions that make general anesthesia risky, or when patients prefer non-pharmacological approaches.
Not surprisingly many people in that period of time died on the operating table or soon afterwards from traumatic shock. By using hypnosis Esdaile was able to improve their chances of survival significantly.
So how can we use this knowledge to help people who are suffering from chronic pain, such as arthritis, back pain, fibromyalgia, migraines etc? The next article will explore the amazing results that can be obtained.
REIKI
To understand reiki, we must first discuss life force energy. This energy we speak of can be seen in many Eastern traditions. It may be known as Chi, Ki, Prana, there are others but these are the most widely known. Martial artists are also well aware of these terms. You may be aware of practices such as Tai Chi or Chi Gung.
The life force energy is what makes us alive, without it we are just a bunch of chemicals. We believe that we are all made up of energy. That everything living thing in the universe is made of this energy. This energy is often referred to as subtle energy. Maybe you have been to an acupuncturist or seen a chart with the meridians of the body marked out? The acupuncturist manipulates the acupuncture points (energy points) on the meridians with very fine needles, acupressure uses finger pressure. Chakras are energy centres there are seven main ones and many minor ones. There are also higher chakras, but that’s perhaps for another time. Many of the ancient beliefs, known to mystics, shamans etc are now starting to be shown to be possible by modern science. Radioactive tracers gave evidence of the meridian system, Kirlian photography was able to show the aura that surrounds the body of human, animals and plants. Quantum physics suggests that everything, including humans, can be described in terms of energy and particles. At the most basic level, quantum physics deals with the behavior of very small particles, like electrons and photons, which exhibit both particle-like and wave-like properties. This dual nature is a key aspect of quantum mechanics.
In a broader sense, everything in the universe, including humans, is made up of atoms, which are composed of subatomic particles. These particles are governed by the principles of quantum mechanics. Energy is a fundamental concept in quantum physics, as particles can be described by their energy states. wherever you believe this energy comes from, whether it be from God or the universe, there is ample evidence to suggest that something is definitely happening and that this energy can be manipulated for our good.
